Homemade Applesauce

Well here we go!
This is my first post to begin my food blog and I am so excited because I have been wanting to do this for months!
Before we start talking about the amazing applesauce that I made today I want to tell you guys a little more about my blog. As you see, the name of my blog is Bite of Life As A Sailor's Wife.
My husband will be flying out in about two weeks to attend boot camp for the Navy. He made a big decision for our family and for this country. I soon will have lots of time on my hands with no husband at home. This time will allow for me to dive more into my passion, my passion for food! I want to begin to share my passion with others.
Okay okay now let's start talking about food because I know we all love talking about food.

What I chose to first feature is homemade applesauce because this is something I have never done before. I chose to recreate a recipe from the Pioneer Woman. She has to be one of my favorite food bloggers and my favorite show to watch on the Food Network.
Hopefully each week I can feature a new recipe that I have never done before so that we can all learn together!

Homemade Applesauce

To prepare any recipe I like to first prepare all my ingredients to make sure I have everything and that I don't once again need to make a trip to the grocery store.

The main ingredients you need for this applesauce is:
A variety of apples ( whatever is your favorite )
Apple juice, apple cider, or just plain water
The juice of a lemon ( I used lemon juice already prepared)
Brown sugar or white sugar
Any variety of spices

To begin, take your apples and peel them. As you can see I had already peeled the apples before taking the picture, whoops! I had probably about 3 pounds of apples. Ree Drummond used about 6 pounds but it is just my husband and I that I cook for. Oh hey, you are probably wondering what kind of apples I chose to use. I used some Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, and some sort of Lady Apple. ;)

The apples need to be cut into slices so I decided to use my handy dandy Kitchen Aid apple cutter. It makes things so much faster! Don't forget to remove the core, no one wants to bite into a chunk of seeds.

After peeling and cutting all your apples go ahead and throw them in the pot or gently place them into the pot if you aren't feeling so violent.

Time for the liquids! Add about a cup of apple juice and the juice of a lemon.

Now the fun part, you get to add the sugar and seasonings. This is the part where you get to feel adventurous and make this applesauce YOUR'S. I used brown sugar about a half cup , a tiny bit of white granulated sugar, teaspoon of cinnamon, and a half teaspoon of nutmeg.

Turn your burner onto Medium- medium high heat and stir the apples.

Go ahead and cover the pot and let the apples cook for about 25 minutes. Oh and enjoy the wonderful smell that will be permeating through your house.

After about 25 minutes lift the lid and look at those glorious apples. Stir them around a little and they should be soft and breaking up into largish chunks.

I transferred the apples to another large bowl while they are still nice and hot. You can either place them into a blender or food processor. I chose to use my hand blender because my husband just bought it for me and I was way to excited to use it. You really can do anything as long as you can mix those apples and make them applesauce. I wanted the applesauce to be nice and pureed because I really didn't want any large chunks.

BAM! After its all mixed it should be beautiful and smooth. I decided to place mine in the fridge overnight so that it would be completely cooled before I ate it.

Alright that's it for my first post!
I had so much fun with this homemade applesauce now it's your turn!
